Complaint filed against Sonia Gandhi for ‘poor thing’ remark on President
text_fieldsMuzaffarpur: A complaint was filed against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in a court in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, on Saturday for her controversial “poor thing” remark about President Droupadi Murmu.
Sudhir Ojha, a Muzaffarpur-based lawyer, filed the complaint seeking the registration of an FIR against Gandhi for allegedly insulting the highest constitutional office in India. Ojha also named Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as co-accused, requesting legal action against them as well.
In his complaint, Ojha claimed, “Sonia Gandhi has insulted President Murmu by calling her ‘poor thing.’ This is a disrespect to the highest constitutional authority. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should also face legal action for their involvement.” The lawyer sought action under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The court has scheduled the hearing of the matter for February 10.
The remark came after President Murmu’s joint address to Parliament ahead of the Budget session, during which Gandhi was asked by reporters about Murmu’s nearly hour-long speech. Sonia Gandhi was heard saying, “The President was getting very tired by the end... she could hardly speak, poor thing,” seemingly referring to the length of the speech.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, also described the speech as “boring” in a separate clip, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was present alongside them.
Following the remarks, the Rashtrapati Bhavan released a statement condemning the comments as “unacceptable.” The statement clarified that President Murmu was not tired during her address and condemned the disrespect towards the dignity of the office of the President. However, the statement did not name Sonia Gandhi specifically.
