Canada joins Mexico imposing retaliatory tariff on US
text_fieldsMexico City: Canada also announced retaliatory tariff on the US, as same as Mexico did after the Donald Trump administration slapped an across-the-board duties on goods coming from Mexico, The Hindu reported.
On Saturday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that she ordered her economy minister to implement tariff and non-tariff measures to the country's interests, implying as a countermeasure to Trump.
Canadian President Justin Trudeau informed that Ottawa will retaliate against Trump’s move with 25 per cent tariffs on US goods from drinks to appliances.
He told a news conference that he was slapping tariffs on C$155 billion ($107 billion) of US goods. Those on C$30 billion will take effect on Tuesday, the same day as Trump’s tariffs, and duties on the remaining C$125 billion in 21 days
He said the coming weeks will be hard for Canadians, and Trump's tariffs will affect Americans as well.
Trudeau warned Americans that the Trump administration will raise their costs, including food at the grocery store, gas at the pump, etc., and that this will impede their access to an affordable supply of vital goods.
However, Sheinbaum said that Mexico does not want to confront Washington but seeks collaboration and dialogue. When Trump claimed that the tariff imposed on Mexico is over the country's failure to restrict fentanyl from getting into the US, Sheinbaum pointed out that after her ascent to Mexico's helm in October last year, 20 million doses of the deadly drug were seized so far. She added the administration also detained 1,00,000 people over the item's trafficking.
