NIXI launches internship with Rs 20K stipend for internet governance
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has launched the Internet Governance Internship and Capacity Building Scheme to foster awareness and expertise in Internet governance among Indian citizens. The initiative, announced on Saturday, includes a fixed monthly stipend of Rs 20,000 for interns and support for conducting mandatory outreach programmes, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, and Chairman of NIXI, emphasized the need for diverse professionals to engage in internet governance and address societal concerns.
“Our aim is to inspire young minds to learn, grow, and apply their knowledge to positively impact organizations and communities, contributing to a fair and inclusive internet ecosystem,” Krishnan said.
The programme seeks to develop the next generation of tech policy leaders and internet governance experts. Highlighting the shift in career preferences among youth, Krishnan added, “Today’s generation values experience over traditional stable jobs. NIXI’s Internet Governance Internship offers a unique opportunity for those passionate about digital policy, providing global exposure.”
The initiative is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively engage with global internet governance organizations such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Internet Society (ISOC), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Interns will collaborate with leading experts in the field to address emerging challenges in internet governance.
The programme features two internship tracks: a six-month programme and a three-month programme, both conducted bi-annually.
Dr. Devesh Tyagi, CEO of NIXI, called the initiative a crucial step toward empowering Indian citizens to play an active role in the global internet governance ecosystem.
“By nurturing the next generation of internet governance experts, NIXI is paving the way for a more inclusive and accessible digital future,” Tyagi noted.
This comprehensive effort aims to create a pool of domestic talent capable of addressing internet governance issues and contributing to their resolution, MeitY added.
