‘Dogs and Muslims not allowed’ poster at agriculture university in WB triggers row

An Islamophobic and offensive poster bearing the message “Dogs and Muslims not allowed. All eyes on Pahalgam. Terrorism means Islam” was discovered pasted on the entrance notice board of the Faculty of Agriculture at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), a premier agricultural university in India, and it has triggered shock and condemnation from students and staff.
The poster appeared shortly after a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, including those of Indian tourists, two foreigners, and a local youth, thereby fuelling communal tensions and a surge in Islamophobic discourse across the country, Maktoob Media reported.
The militant group known as The Resistance Front (TRF), which is active in Kashmir, claimed responsibility for the attack, while the Indian government has accused Pakistan of harbouring and enabling such outfits, thereby intensifying bilateral strain.
Although authorities have not identified the individuals responsible for placing the hateful poster, the incident has disturbed the university community, which is known for its academic focus and diverse student body.
While an investigation is likely to follow, concerns are mounting over how such a divisive message was allowed to appear on campus, especially in a politically charged atmosphere following the Pahalgam attack.
