International Clean Energy Day 2025 sparks global call for renewable solutions
text_fieldsInternational Clean Energy Day 2025 was celebrated on January 26, bringing together global leaders, industry experts and environmental advocates to emphasize the urgent need for a transition to clean energy. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023, the annual observance serves as a call to action, reinforcing the role of sustainable energy solutions in combating climate change and promoting economic and environmental stability.
The event, held at the Sheraton Riyadh Hotel, was attended by prominent figures, including HRH General Dr. Abdulaziz Bin Naser Al Saud, chairman of Baseraa Group; Hon. Harees Haneefa, the newly appointed trade commissioner of the Asian Arab Chamber of Commerce in Saudi Arabia; Mohammed Al-Dulaim, president of the Saudi-Canadian Business Council and Jaber Al Massoud, chairman of Barzan Group of Companies. Ambassadors from Kenya, Kosovo, Gabon, Myanmar, Uruguay, Chad and Sierra Leone also participated, highlighting the global significance of the occasion.
Discussions focused on strategies to accelerate the adoption of clean energy while addressing economic and trade implications. HRH General Dr. Abdulaziz Bin Naser Al Saud underscored Saudi Arabia’s commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and investing in sustainable energy. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration, stating that the Kingdom is proud to work with the Asian Arab Chamber of Commerce in advocating for clean energy solutions that secure the future of agriculture and economic stability.
Dr. Asif Iqbal, president of the Indian Economic Trade Organization, spoke on the country’s transition toward renewable energy, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s growing push to develop and implement clean energy technologies. He noted that as the world’s largest exporter of oil, the Kingdom has the potential to shift from being an oil capital to a global leader in renewable energy.
Hon. Harees Haneefa, in his first remarks as trade commissioner, emphasized the importance of education and international trade partnerships in advancing clean energy. He announced the 2nd Saudi Arabia Green Energy Week, scheduled for May 14–15 in Riyadh, which will bring together industry experts to discuss advancements in solar PV, wind power, energy storage and green hydrogen. The event is expected to attract more than 500 participants and provide a platform for discussing the latest developments in clean energy projects across Saudi Arabia and the MENA region.
Beyond policy discussions, the event showcased major clean energy projects that are shaping the industry. Sinopec Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to Saudi Vision 2030 by contributing to the world’s largest onshore wind farm in NEOM, a futuristic city integrating renewable energy and innovative technology.
International Clean Energy Day 2025 reinforced that the transition to sustainable energy is not just an environmental imperative but also a key driver of economic growth, improved public health and technological progress. The discussions in Riyadh highlighted the need for continued cooperation at both local and global levels to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable future.
