Sheikh Mohammed celebrates a decade of DXB as the world's busiest international airport
text_fieldsDubai International Airport (DXB) has maintained its status as the world’s busiest international airport over the past decade, welcoming over 770 million passengers and witnessing 3.3 million air movements, according to Airports Council International.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, emphasized Dubai’s prominence in the aviation sector.
"Dubai is the airport of the world and a new world in the aviation sector," he said.
Last year alone, DXB recorded a staggering 92 million passengers and 440,000 air movements, with 106 airlines operating flights to 272 cities across 107 countries. Apart from DXB, Dubai also boasts the Al Maktoum International Airport, which started as a cargo hub in 2010 and expanded to include passenger flights in 2013.
In a major expansion move, Dubai’s aviation infrastructure is set for a transformation with the development of a new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport. Sheikh Mohammed said, "Over the next 10 years, Dh128 billion will be spent to reshape the international aviation landscape".
The ambitious project, which was approved in April last year, has already begun construction. Covering a vast 70-square-kilometer area, the expansion will feature five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates. Once completed, Al Maktoum International Airport will be five times larger than DXB, with all operations from DXB eventually transferring there.
With these developments, Dubai continues to solidify its position as a global aviation hub, reinforcing its role as a leader in the international travel and aviation industry.
