Waqf law has no place in Constitution, claims PM Modi
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Strongly criticising the Waqf law, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that it is against social justice and has no place in the Constitution.
Addressing party workers in Maharashtra after the Mahayuti’s alliance, of which BJP is a part, Modi claimed that the Waqf Act was brought by the Congress to appease certain sections and enlarge its vote bank.
He claimed that Congress made the laws to appease some, not even caring about the scheduled castes. The Waqf Act is an example of such a law.
The PM said that Congress evicted many from lands near Delhi and gave them to the Waqf Board. By creating the law, Congress gave capital punishment to true secularism, Modi claimed.
Modi's remarks come as the new Waqf Bill is set to be introduced in the winter session of Parliament, which begins on November 25. This was after strong opposition from the Opposition.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the JPC scrutinising the Waqf Bill, Jagdambika Pal, said on Thursday that the panel's draft report is ready to be taken up for discussion in Parliament. This was when opposition MPs in the committee demanded an extension of the Nov 29 deadline for more deliberations on the report, The Times of India reported.
The All-India Members Conclave of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), held in Hyderabad from 15 to 17 November 2024, concluded with a strong rejection of the proposed Waqf Bill. The conclave accused the bill of undermining public interests and Muslim community resources. JIH praised efforts by Muslims and other stakeholders to highlight the bill's flaws and demanded its complete withdrawal, asserting that it is inconsistent with public sentiment and justice.
