US citizen arrested for unauthorised visit to North Sentinel island in Andamans
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Crime Investigation Department on Monday has arrested a US citizen in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for entering a restricted tribal reserve area.
The 24-year-old, identified as Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, was arrested for entering an area of the North Sentinel island, Scroll reported.
It is reported by PTI that the man entered the area without permission nevertheless traveling to the North Sentinel island requires a permit.
The Sentinelese tribe, whose population was around 40 in 2011, reportedly repulses contact with outsiders.
It is reported citing police that Polyakov, having arrived in Port Blair on March 26, went over to the North Sentinel island from the Kurmadera beach on Saturday at about 1 am.
He ventured to the area carrying ‘offerings for the Sentinelese’ which included a coconut and a can of the beverage Coca-Cola.
On reaching the northeastern shore of the North Sentinel island by 10 am, Polyakov lingered offshore for an hour, before blowing his white but failed to see anybody.
It is reported citing a police that footage found in his possession showed Polyakov landing on the North Sentinel island.
The US citizen is now facing charges under the Foreigners Act, 1946, alongside certain sections of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Amendment Regulation, 2012.
