Ahmedabad: Children playing near a drain in Gujarat's Surat made a horrifying discovery of a foetus lying abandoned among empty cigarette packets and balloons a few days ago, according to NDTV.

It has emerged yesterday the foeuts was discovered on January 9 at Surat's Apekshanagar.

Children saw carrion-eating birds waiting to swoop down on the foetus.

They didn’t want to witness the horrifying scene and threw stones to disperse the birds, before raising an alarm. The police were called in.

Identified as a female foetus, it was transported to a hospital where doctors declared it dead.

Subsequently, police set out to investigate the incident which led them to the doorstep of a 16-year-old girl.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 4 Vijay Singh Gurjar said her mother and the person who aborted the foetus feigned ignorance.

The16-year-old was taken for ‘a medical examination at the New Civil Hospital where a doctor confirmed that she had been pregnant’.

Police have found that the 16-year-old went to school till January 13.

She told the police she was in relationship with a 17-year-old boy whom she met on Instagram.

‘Both of them came in contact with each other through Instagram. The boy lived in a rented house in Pandesara, an industrial area in Surat, and they had physical relations due to which the girl became pregnant,’ the police officer was quoted as saying.

Upon learning she was pregnant, the boy fled his home to Mumbai and sent her packet of tablets to ‘end pregnancy’.

The girl reportedly told the police that she had a miscarriage at home after taking two tablets and threw the foetus away.

"We have taken their (boy and girl) DNA samples and an investigation is underway," the officer said.

The boy has been detained and will be produced before a Juvenile Justice Board, the officer said.
