8 farmers die by suicide daily in Maharashtra: Minister Makarand Jadhav
text_fieldsMumbai: Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Jadhav-Patil on Monday acknowledged that reports of eight farmers dying by suicide daily in the past 56 months were "partially true."
He was responding to a question raised by NCP MLC Shivajirao Garje during the question hour in the legislative council. Jadhav-Patil noted that the number of farmer suicides was particularly high in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Amravati divisions.
The minister outlined the contributing factors behind the suicides and detailed the government's efforts to support affected families. According to official data, in the past year, 952 farmers took their lives in the Marathwada division, 168 in Akola, 112 in Wardha, 205 in Beed, and 1,069 in the Amravati division.
Between January 1 and December 31, 2024, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division recorded 952 farmer suicides, of which 707 cases were deemed eligible for assistance, and aid was received in 433 cases. In Beed district, 167 cases were approved for assistance, with financial aid disbursed in 108 cases. The Amravati division saw 441 cases eligible for assistance, and 332 received aid.
In response to a specific query, Jadhav-Patil stated that Mantha taluka in Jalna district reported 13 farmer suicides between April 2023 and September 2024.
"The government is committed to providing support to the families of farmers who have died by suicide," the minister assured.
