Pro-Khalistan graffiti defaces Hindu temple in Canada, authorities launch investigation
text_fieldsA Hindu temple in Surrey, Canada, was vandalised in the early hours of April 19 with pro-Khalistan slogans, sparking outrage and calls for stronger action against hate crimes.
According to a statement issued by the temple management, the Shree Lakshmi Narayana Mandir was targeted at approximately 3:00 AM by two unidentified individuals. The vandals defaced the entrance sign and temple pillars with the word "Khalistan." Additionally, a security camera was stolen during the act.
Describing the incident as deeply troubling, the temple authorities condemned the act as not only criminal but also an attack on a sacred space that serves as a spiritual home to many, including children and elderly members of the community.
“This is not just vandalism; it is a direct assault on our faith, our heritage, and our shared values,” the statement read.
The incident marks the third reported instance of such vandalism at the temple, according to Canadian journalist Daniel Bordman, raising concerns over the increasing frequency of such hate-driven acts in the region.
An official complaint has been filed with the Surrey Police, and temple authorities confirmed full cooperation with law enforcement to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Temple leaders have urged members of the public and political representatives across all levels of government to unequivocally denounce the attack. “Hate crimes targeting places of worship have no place in a multicultural and inclusive society like Canada,” the statement emphasised.
