New York doctor fired after her 'Long live Hamas, Hezbollah' post
text_fieldsNew York: An assistant professor of medicine in New York City has been fired after her post on social media post supporting Hamas.
Lila Abassi working at Mount Sinai's Upper East Side hospital made statements ‘Long Live Hamas & Hezbollah’ in a post.
A hospital spokesperson told The NY Post that Lila Abassi was let go earlier this month following her controversial post.
Hamas, which controls Gaza, and Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah are labelled terrorist organisations by the US, and Israel.
The 46-year-old doctor in a series of post called Hamas as ‘noble resistance and freedom fighters,’ alongside terming Israeli army a ‘plague’ accusing it of ‘slaughtering babies’.
Dismissing reports of sexual violence that Hamas allegedly carried out during the October 7, 2023 attack on Southern Israel, she wrote on Facebook ‘Please show me actual rape video’.
Abassi , a 2011 graduate of St. George's University School of Medicine, claimed Israel had ‘massacr[ed] more people on 10/7 than [were] killed by Hamas.’
It is reported that she was fired after ‘weeks of pressure’ from New York City Councilwoman, Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn), who pressed for action more than deleting her social media account.
‘Our most basic expectation of doctors is that they will perform their duties in an unbiased manner - especially a doctor serving a city as ethnically and religiously diverse as ours,’Vernikov reportedly said.
Meanwhile a fellow Mount Sinai doctor told The NY Post that Abassi was known in medical circle as ‘one of the more outspoken and egregiously antisemitic physicians in the community’.
Exposing Abassi’s post, the watchdog group Physicians Against Antisemitism said that no Jewish patient will feel confident about receiving ‘safe care from that individual and by extension, at the facility that employs them’.
