Seoul: Samsung Electronics unveiled the second generation of its generative artificial intelligence (AI) model, 'Gauss 2', at the Samsung Developer Conference Korea 2024. The new model promises enhanced performance, greater efficiency, and expanded application possibilities.

'Gauss 2' builds upon the capabilities of its predecessor, first introduced last year, by helping users automate tasks like composing emails, summarizing documents, and translating content. However, The updated version brings significant improvements in handling multimodal data and seamlessly integrating language, code, and images.

Available in three distinct versions, Compact, Balanced, and Supreme, the 'Gauss 2' model supports between nine to fourteen languages, as well as various programming languages, depending on the specific configuration. The model is designed to handle diverse tasks and is already being used internally by Samsung to boost employee productivity, thanks to its customizable development features.

Cheun Kyung-whoon, president of Samsung Research, highlighted the company's commitment to cutting-edge software development, including AI and data analytics, to enhance user experiences. He added, “With three distinct models, Samsung Gauss 2 is already boosting our internal productivity, and we plan to integrate it into products to deliver higher levels of convenience and personalization.”

Despite the excitement around its new AI model, Samsung continues to face challenges in the tech industry. According to Lin Hong-wen, a senior journalist and chip industry expert, Samsung is under pressure from global and regional competition, particularly from China. Lin pointed out that China's rapid advancement in AI and chip development has reshaped the competitive landscape, with Samsung struggling to secure critical technologies like HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) chips for AI accelerators.
