Mumbai: In a significant boost to the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, global technology giant Lenovo has announced plans to manufacture all its personal computer (PC) models in India within the next three years. The company aims to achieve 100 per cent local production for its PC business, including AI-powered models, as part of its long-term commitment to the Indian market.

The announcement coincides with Lenovo’s 20th anniversary in India. Lenovo India Managing Director Shailendra Katiyal revealed that currently, 30 per cent of the company’s PC sales in the country come from locally manufactured products. This figure is projected to rise to 50 per cent next year and reach full domestic production within three years.

Katiyal also confirmed that Lenovo’s first AI-powered servers will begin rolling out from its India manufacturing hub on April 1. His remarks came during the ‘Lenovo TechWorld India 2025’ event in Mumbai.

In September last year, Lenovo launched a production facility in Puducherry, which is set to manufacture approximately 50,000 enterprise AI servers and 2,400 high-end graphics processing units (GPUs) annually. Additionally, the company is expanding its research and development (R&D) capabilities in India, with plans to establish a new R&D center in Bengaluru.

Mathew Zielinski, President of Lenovo’s International Markets, underscored India’s growing strategic importance, calling it “one of the most important markets in the world.” He emphasized that Lenovo’s manufacturing operations in India are not only catering to domestic demand but also positioning the country as a key exporter.

“Our manufacturing footprint in India is not just building for India but also establishing India as a major global exporter,” Zielinski stated. He further revealed that in 2024 alone, the company built and shipped products worth ₹18,000 crore to and from India.

Lenovo is witnessing rapid growth in AI adoption in India, with its revenue in the country reaching $2.5 billion for the year-to-date period. The company has also expanded its manufacturing footprint in the smartphone segment, exporting Motorola smartphones from India to global markets. Lenovo confirmed that all Motorola phone production is now based in India.
