Gulveer Singh betters his 10,000m national record in California meet
text_fieldsSan Juan Capistrano (USA): India’s long-distance runner Gulveer Singh set a new national record in the men’s 10,000m, clocking 27:00.22 at The Ten 2025 athletics meet in California, surpassing his previous best by 14.66 seconds. His former record of 27:14.88 was set at the Hachioji Long Distance event in Japan in 2024.
Singh, 26, finished sixth in the competition, which is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour silver level. The time places him just 0.22 seconds shy of the automatic qualifying standard for the World Athletics Championships 2025, which is 27:00.00. However, he surpassed the entry standard for the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, which stands at 29:33.26.
This marks the second consecutive year that Singh has broken his own 10,000m national record at The Ten meet. Last year, he clocked 27:41.81, improving on the previous record of 28:02.89 set by Surendra Singh in 2008. Gulveer also improved his time at the Hachioji Long Distance event in Japan later that year.
Singh's latest achievement further cements his position as one of Asia's top long-distance runners, ranking third in the region for the best 10,000m times. He trails Qatar’s Ahmad Hassan Abdullah and Nicholas Kemboi. Earlier this year, Gulveer also set the men’s 3000m indoor national record and the Asian 5000m short track record at a meet in Boston.
Last month, Singh narrowly missed third place at the Terrier DMR Challenge indoor competition in Boston, improving the Asian Indoor 5000m record with a time of 12:59.77, earning him the automatic qualifying standard for the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
