The holy month of Ramadan will officially commence in the UAE on March 1, 2025, following the sighting of the crescent moon. This marks the beginning of the Islamic month of fasting and prayer, aligning with observances in several other countries worldwide.

The Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory in Abu Dhabi was the first to capture an image of the Ramadan crescent on Friday, February 28, 2025, confirming the conclusion of the month of Shaban, which lasted 29 days according to the Hijri calendar.

Earlier this week, the Emirates Fatwa Council had urged Muslims across the UAE to actively sight the moon to determine the start of Ramadan. The confirmation now sets the stage for a month of fasting, spiritual reflection and community gatherings across the country.

The UAE follows Islamic tradition in determining the lunar calendar, with moon sightings playing a crucial role in marking significant religious occasions such as Ramadan and Eid.

Authorities have advised residents to stay updated on official Ramadan announcements regarding work hours, public services and prayer schedules in the coming days.
