Goa SP gets transfer for collecting intel on Bajrang Dal
text_fieldsPanaji: Over an instruction to gather information about some Bajrang Dal leaders in South Goa district, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sunita Sawant got ordered to “relinquish charge”. The move by the BJP government in the state has been called “politically motivated” by the Congress party, The Indian Express reported.
According to Congress’s allegations, the officer is going to be transferred and is because she instructed her subordinates to gather Intel on some leaders of the right-wing Hindutva extremist organisation, Bajrang Dal.
It was on Monday night, officer Sawant was ordered to relinquish charge, that too via a wireless communication.
However, Sawant said that she had no idea what prompted the order and added that she was doing her duty. She said that she acted as per the order, relinquishing charge and reporting at the headquarters.
Congress president in the state, Amit Patakar, said that the moment SP Sawant began collecting information on the Bajrang Dal leaders, the government panicked and decided to transfer her. This proved that the BJP is not interested in governance but in safeguarding its allies, suppressing officers who perform duty with integrity. The hasty transfer is yet another example of the BJP-RSS ideology, interfering with the administration to protect its divisive agenda, TIE reported.
However, Bajrang Dal leadership in the state informed that they have no idea about the developments such as Officer Sawant’s transfer or that police were in pursuit of their leaders. The organisation claimed that its name is being needlessly dragged into issues in which they have no involvement.
SP Sunita Sawant has a good professional profile. It was only two days ago, that she received a special recognition award from the state for “accurate planning and development of security forces, static surveillance teams and flying squads and playing a key role in ensuring peace during Lok Sabha 2024 elections in the state”. She was also selected for the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service last year.
