Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the launch of a new short film competition aimed at raising awareness about the causes and dangers of traffic accidents. The initiative, titled the ‘Road Safety Film Festival’, targets university students and postgraduate filmmakers aged 18 to 35.

Set to run from April 7 to July 14, 2025, the competition encourages young creatives to submit original short films that spotlight critical road safety issues. Participants can compete individually or in teams of up to three members, with the chance to win cash prizes and receive certificates of achievement and recognition.

The festival features three key categories, each focused on a major contributor to traffic accidents:

- Dangers of sudden lane departure

- Risks of driving distractions

- Unsafe behaviour involving bicycles and electric scooters

According to Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, the themes were chosen based on recent data showing that sudden lane changes and distracted driving are among the leading causes of fatal accidents. The third category was added to reflect the growing use of soft mobility devices such as bicycles and e-scooters, which has led to a rise in risky behaviours on the road.

"Through this competition, we aim to engage the youth in shaping a safer transport culture by encouraging creative and impactful storytelling around key traffic issues," said Al Khzaimy.

Entrants may submit multiple films, as long as each submission is original and contributes meaningfully to road safety awareness. Submissions will be evaluated on creativity, relevance and impact, with full guidelines and eligibility criteria available on RTA’s official website.

Winners in each category will receive cash prizes and official recognition from the RTA, as part of the authority’s broader efforts to enhance public engagement in traffic safety initiatives.
