UAE-based man gives 'triple talaq' to wife in Kerala over WhatsApp
text_fieldsKasargod: A 21-year-old woman from Kerala's Kasargod was left in shock after receiving a WhatsApp message from her husband, Abdul Razzaq, in which he declared "talaq, talaq, talaq" to her father, effectively ending their marriage.
Razzaq, who works in the UAE, sent the message on February 21, abruptly severing ties with his wife, whom he had married in August 2022 when she was just 18. The woman's family was devastated by the sudden development, particularly because Razzaq had reportedly been demanding money from them.
Triple talaq, a practice that allows a Muslim man to divorce his wife by simply uttering "talaq" three times, was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2017 and later criminalized under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act in 2019. Despite this, Razzaq proceeded with the now-illegal practice via a mere text message.
The woman revealed that Razzaq had taken her to the UAE once but repeatedly demanded money from her. "I am shocked by what he has done. I believe he has a doubtful mentality. I want justice, and we will file a case," she said.
Her father supported her claims, stating that money had indeed been sent to Razzaq, and he possessed documents to prove the transactions. "After receiving the money, Razzaq sent the triple talaq message. There is a proper procedure for talaq that involves elders and religious leaders. This is not the way," he said.
According to the family, the money was intended for Razzaq to bring his wife to the UAE, and to arrange for the amount, they had even sold her gold ornaments. The woman was supposed to travel to the UAE on February 24, but just days before, on February 21, the shocking message arrived.
The family has now approached the local police, filing a complaint against Razzaq for cheating and seeking justice for their daughter.
