Bahraich/UP: Uttar Pradesh shot a man before arresting him, accusing him of cow slaughter. Police claimed that the man was involved in cow slaughter. The man was arrested in the Jarwal Road area here on Saturday morning.

They said the man, identified as Ashraf, had been shot in the leg and was admitted to the district hospital for treatment.

According to the additional superintendent of police (rural), Durga Prasad Tiwari, a case was registered. He claimed that remains of cattle, including that of cows, were found in the wheat and sugarcane fields near Harchanda village under the Jarwal Road police station area on March 4.

Tiwari said the police received a tip-off that the accused would go to Harchanda village early on Saturday.

During a joint operation, the crime branch and the police team found the suspect arriving on a motorcycle at around 4 am. On seeing the police, the man allegedly tried to escape by opening fire. The police retaliated and shot at his leg.

Police said the alleged accused is undergoing treatment, and information about his criminal history is being collected.

Meanwhile, in Haridwar, activists of Bajrang Dal, the right-wing Hindutva extremist organisation, barged into the Rishikul Ayurvedic College here on Saturday in protest against some Muslim students organising an Iftar party on the campus. Bajrang Dal office-bearer Amit Kumar alleged that the party had been organised in the "Hindu religious city" as part of a conspiracy to bring outsiders to the college campus. Organising any such event by non-Hindus in the Haridwar area is already prohibited under the Municipal Corporation bylaws, he claimed, reports PTI.
