Jaipur: BJP legislator in Rajasthan Assembly Gopal Sharma calling Congress chief whip Rafeek Khan a Pakistani multiple times caused a huge uproar in the House, reports The Indian Express reported.
Sharma used the term “Pakistani” to refer to Khan during a discussion about grants from the Department of Urban Development and Housing and local self-government.
What infuriated Gopal Sharma was reportedly Khan’s request to Chairperson Sandeep Sharma to impart some knowledge to him. Khan made the statement while comparing the previous Congress government’s performance on urban development to that of the current BJP rule.
The BJP leader calling him Pakistani made Khan object to Gopal Sharma’s behaviour, which escalated to confrontation, The Times of India reported. During this, Sharma made a reference to Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, but the House Chairperson Sandeep Sharma reminded him that non-members could not be named in the state Assembly.
Congress leaders in the House strongly condemned Gopal Sharma’s statement and raised their voices when Sandeep Sharma intervened and restored order in the House.
Later, Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully spoke about the incident on social media, calling Gopal Sharma’s comment “intolerable and condemnable”.
“BJP leaders are competing to lower the level of their statements day by day,” Jully said online. “They do not see any difference between the speeches given in the Assembly and those given on the street.”
On March 6 last year, a conflict arose when BJP leader Gopal Sharma started a fight with Khan during a Board meeting of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation. The controversial BJP leader said that he will not let Jaipur become a “mini-Pakistan”.
