A social media video exposing open defecation and severe pollution at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj has sparked widespread outrage. Influencer Nidhi Chaudhary, who attended the sacred event and participated in the ritual bathing ceremony, recorded and shared a distressing video highlighting the environmental degradation at the Sangam’s banks.

Chaudhary’s footage revealed abandoned garments, plastic waste, and decaying floral offerings contaminating the riverbank. The most alarming aspect of her video was the presence of open defecation in several locations, raising serious concerns about hygiene and the sanctity of the pilgrimage site. Expressing deep disappointment, she urged the government to take strict action against those responsible for polluting the sacred waters.

The video quickly gained traction across social media, drawing strong reactions from netizens and environmental activists. Many condemned the poor upkeep of the site and called for immediate intervention to protect the holy river.

The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 14 with the Makar Sankranti "snan" and will conclude on February 26 with the Mahashivratri "snan," has attracted millions of devotees. Despite arrangements by the Uttar Pradesh government, including temporary housing, portable restrooms, and drinking water facilities, the video has exposed significant shortcomings in maintaining the site’s cleanliness.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has also raised concerns about the health risks posed to pilgrims due to inadequate sewage management. It warned that failure to prevent contamination of the Ganga River in Prayagraj endangers both the devotees and the sanctity of the religious festival. The revelations have intensified calls for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations to safeguard the holy site.
