New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster economic relations, Qatar has expressed its readiness to expedite negotiations for a new Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) with India. This announcement was made by Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani, during the India-Qatar Business Forum held at ITC Maurya in New Delhi.

Sheikh Faisal highlighted the deepening trade relations, noting that India has emerged as Qatar’s third-largest trading partner. He emphasized the need for businesses in both nations to explore cross-border opportunities to enhance investment and industrial cooperation. “We have modernized our investment ecosystem and invited Indian investors to explore the true potential of Qatar’s economy,” he stated. He also underscored Qatar’s commitment to fast-tracking the BIPPA negotiations.

The forum was graced by India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, who delivered a keynote address. Organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in collaboration with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the event witnessed participation from prominent business figures from both nations, including M.A. Yusuf Ali, J.K. Menon, Ravi Pillai, Mohammed Altaf, Dr Mohan Thomas, Thaha, and Mansoor Palloor.

This business forum coincided with the state visit of Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to India from February 17-18, 2025. During his visit, both nations agreed to double their trade to $28 billion over the next five years and are exploring the possibility of signing a free trade agreement. Discussions also encompassed enhancing energy cooperation and diversifying trade beyond traditional sectors.

The collaborative efforts and high-level engagements underscore the commitment of both India and Qatar to strengthen their bilateral ties, focusing on sustainable economic growth and mutual prosperity.
