New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held talks with Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font on Tuesday, discussing ways to strengthen the long-standing bilateral ties between India and Chile.

Jaishankar shared his enthusiasm about the meeting on X, stating, "Pleased to call on President Gabriel Boric of Chile at the start of his State Visit to India. Appreciate his commitment to deepening our long-standing cooperation." He expressed confidence that the talks between Boric and Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day would lead to new partnerships and greater engagement between the two nations.

Boric, who arrived in New Delhi earlier that day for a five-day State Visit to India, was warmly received by Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita and was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the airport. In a post on X, Boric highlighted the importance of the visit, stating, "6:30 a.m. in New Delhi, and from here we begin this State Visit to India, a momentous occasion for strengthening and diversifying our economic, political, and cultural relations." He emphasized that both countries share opportunities for growth in key sectors like agribusiness, innovation, and the creative industries.

Boric’s delegation includes high-level officials, ministers, parliament members, business leaders, media representatives, and those involved in the India-Chile cultural exchange. The president is set to visit Agra, Mumbai, and Bengaluru before concluding his visit on April 5.

Later in the day, Boric will meet Prime Minister Modi for comprehensive discussions on India-Chile relations. PM Modi will also host a special luncheon in honor of Boric. The Chilean president is also scheduled to meet with Indian President Droupadi Murmu for further talks, followed by a banquet in his honor.

In Mumbai and Bengaluru, Boric will engage with political figures, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators, aiming to foster collaboration across various sectors. The visit presents a significant opportunity for both nations to assess and advance their bilateral ties while also discussing regional and global issues of mutual interest.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that India and Chile have traditionally enjoyed warm and friendly relations, with a shared commitment to multilateral cooperation. Both countries have aligned views on key global issues, including climate change, renewable energy, and the expansion and reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Chile has consistently supported India’s bid for a permanent UNSC seat and shares concerns regarding international terrorism, condemning it in all its forms.
