In a landmark move to enhance governance through digital technology, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched WhatsApp-based civic services, making it the first state in India to do so.

This initiative aims to improve transparency, efficiency, and accessibility for citizens by reducing the need for multiple visits to government offices.

The project was officially launched by Nara Lokesh, Minister for Information Technology and Education, and son of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, at his residence in Amaravati.

The first phase of the initiative will offer 161 services across key government departments, including Endowments, Energy, APSRTC, Revenue, Anna Canteens, CM Relief Fund, and Municipal Administration. As the initiative progresses, the number of available services is set to increase to 520 in the second phase.

Speaking at the launch, Nara Lokesh highlighted the importance of this initiative in addressing common grievances raised by citizens. "During my Yuvagalam Padayatra, I witnessed firsthand the frustration of people who had to repeatedly apply for caste and income certificates or visit offices to pay utility bills. This initiative ensures that no one has to struggle for basic documents and services anymore," he said.

The concept was developed based on the realisation that most households in Andhra Pradesh own smartphones and actively use WhatsApp. The government collaborated with Meta to bring this idea to life, with an official agreement signed on October 22 last year.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who conducted a review meeting at the Secretariat before the launch, emphasised the importance of cybersecurity and data protection in this digital transformation. He directed officials to strengthen forensic and cybersecurity measures to safeguard citizens' personal information.

Meta India's Vice President and Head, Sandhya Devanathan, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that they will work closely with the Andhra Pradesh government to enhance the "Mana Mitra" WhatsApp services.

With Andhra Pradesh leading the way in WhatsApp governance, this initiative is expected to set a precedent for other states to adopt similar digital reforms, making government services more accessible and user-friendly for millions of citizens.
