Indian-origin man gets 8 years jail for ramming gate near White House
text_fieldsNew York: Indian national Sai Varshith Kandula was sentenced to eight years for ramming a rented truck into a gate near the White House on May 22, 2023.
The 20-year-old, who was a lawful permanent resident of the US with a green card at the time, wanted to overthrow the US government and replace it with dictatorship.
NBC News quoted the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Washington as stating that his goal was ‘to overthrow the democratically elected government of the United States in order to replace it with a dictatorship fueled by Nazi ideology.’
Sai Varshith Kandula reportedly pleaded guilty to a charge of willful injury or depredation of US property.
The attorney termed that Kandula had rather an ‘assemblage of delusional thoughts’ than a plan when he took the truck out to White House.
The attorney added in the sentencing memorandum that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia after his arrest.
Born in Chandanagar, India, Kandula will have to serve three years of supervised release in addition to the prison term, District Court Judge Dabney L Friedrich ordered.
The prosecutor's office said that Kandula rammed a U-Haul truck into the gate at the intersection of H Street NW and 16th Street NW.
Afterwards he emerged from the disabled truck pulling out a Nazi swastika flag from his backpack.
He was arrested and no one was injured in the incident; however, he nearly struck two pedestrians.
It is reported citing the sentencing memo that Kandula will mostly likely be deported to India to live with his family.
