Kuala Lumpur: At the U19 Women’ T20I World Cup tournament here, defending champions India started their campaign with a nine-wicket win against West Indies after bowlers Parunika Sisodia, Joshitha VJ, and Aayushi Shukla picked seven wickets between themselves at the Bayuemas Oval on Sunday. India won the toss and elected to bowl first and bowled Windies out for 44 in 13.2 hours.

Pacer Joshitha, named Player of the Match, dented West Indies early by taking 2-5 in two overs before Parunika (3-7) and Aayushi (2-6) shone to bowl them out for just 44 in 13.2 overs.

India was also helped by the fact that the West Indies’ shoddy running between the wickets gave them three scalps. In reply, India managed to chase down the total in only 4.2 overs with nine wickets in hand, as vice-captain Sanika Chalke and wicketkeeper G Kamalini remained unbeaten on 18 and 16, respectively.

In another match, Sri Lanka beat hosts as well as debutants Malaysia by 139 runs at the Bayuemas Oval. Malaysia sent Sri Lanka to bat first, and it turned in favour of the latter. Dahami Sanethma top-scored with 55 off 52 balls, laced with five boundaries, as Sri Lanka made 162/6. During the second innings, Chamudi Praboda took 3-5, including bowling two maidens to have Malaysia bowled out for just 23.

For Sri Lanka, opener Sajana Kavindi blasted 30 off 13 balls, including six fours, for a start. Meanwhile, Nur Aliya scored Malaysia’s first World Cup run.
