AMU turns 100, landmarks illuminated for centenary celebrations

Initially established as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875, by the forerunner of the Aligarh Movement Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. The MAO, in 1920 became the Aligarh Muslim University, competing 100 years in 2020.

After establishing schools in Moradabad (1858) and Ghazipur (1863) Sir Syed Ahmad Khan went on to pursue his of creating an educational institution along the lines of Cambridge and Oxford Universities. He faced a lot criticism from many orthodox scholars. He was also accused of having converted to Christianity.

However, his selfless efforts led to the university being a premier institute of learning in India, offering over 300 degree courses in various disciplines.

The university has produced individuals who've excelled in various fields; some of the alumni have become heads of state and government, diplomats, scientists, historians, filmmakers and popular sports persons.

To observe the centenary of the university, buildings and landmarks such as the Administrative Block, Bab-e-Syed, University Staff Club, Faculty of Arts, Maulana Azad Library, Victoria Gate, Sir Syed House, Centenary Gate, University Mosque and Strachey Hall, etc were illuminated during the evening December 1 with projections of creative lights and design.

On the completion of AMU's journey of 100 years, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor congratulated the students, teachers, non-teaching staff, alumni and all well-wishers of the University.

"This day is not only an occasion to celebrate but also to express our indebtedness and gratitude to the illustrious community leaders who strove hard to get MAO College upgraded into Aligarh Muslim University. On this day we also remember all those who contributed to the all-round development and growth of the University and making it an Institution of National and International repute," Prof Mansoor said.

Prof. Mansoor also pointed out that the Organizing Committee of AMU Centenary Celebrations had drawn a comprehensive program for the year 2020, but due to Covid-19 pandemic, the university had to drastically restrict and curtail the programs and decided to confine it only to the virtual programs.

"We fondly remember the legendary founder of the University, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan on this special day for his broad vision to extricate the Muslims from the meshes of medieval traditionalism, to inculcate and develop in them scientific temper and to equip them with modern education." He further emphasized.
