Israel expands military offensive in Gaza to seize 'large areas'

Tel Aviv: Israel has intensified its military offensive in Gaza, with Defence Minister Israel Katz announcing the deployment of additional divisions following overnight strikes in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are advancing to clear terrorist strongholds, dismantle infrastructure, and secure extensive territory as part of the expanded operation.

Katz affirmed that the goal of Operation 'Strength and Sword' is to exert maximum pressure on Hamas to secure the release of hostages. "Expanding the operation will increase the pressure on the Hamas and also on the population in Gaza, advancing the achievement of this sacred and important goal," he posted on X.

Ahead of the expansion, the IDF issued an evacuation warning for Rafah and surrounding areas, including large sections between Rafah and Khan Younis, where ground operations had not previously taken place. This follows Katz's announcement last week that he had approved operational plans for the continued offensive.

During a visit to the Gaza Division headquarters at Re'im Camp, Katz stressed that the primary objective remains the return of hostages. He warned that if Hamas fails to release them, it will face escalating territorial losses and intensified military strikes until its complete defeat.

Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar accused Hamas of deliberately prolonging the conflict. "Hamas continues to push for the renewal of war, refusing to release our hostages and refusing to disarm," he stated during a media briefing. He also alleged that Hamas brutally suppressed protests within Gaza, killing demonstrators.

Israeli forces resumed strikes on March 18, effectively ending a ceasefire agreement that had been in place since January 19. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the renewed offensive, stating that Hamas had rejected offers to extend the ceasefire's initial phase.
