Indian students struggle as Canada tightens study visa rules

Thousands of Indian students are facing distress due to recent changes in Canada’s study visa policies, which have brought increased restrictions and financial challenges. The discontinuation of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program and the introduction of a cap on international student permits have made it difficult for aspiring students to pursue higher education in Canada.

With stricter visa regulations now in place, study abroad consultants across India are witnessing a surge in inquiries as students and their families seek clarity on the way forward. The new policies have led to heightened scrutiny of visa applications and stricter departure rules, adding to the uncertainty. These changes have also caused significant anxiety among the estimated 423,000 Indian students currently in Canada.

In addition to visa restrictions, financial hurdles have emerged as another major concern, particularly for students planning to enroll in Fall 2025. The Canadian government now requires a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of C$20,635, a substantial increase that poses a significant financial burden for middle-class Indian families. Meanwhile, financial institutions are becoming more hesitant to approve student loans for those intending to study in Canada, further complicating the situation.

Amid the growing uncertainty, many students are now considering alternative study destinations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Education consultants are advising prospective students to explore multiple options, assess financial feasibility, and stay updated on evolving visa policies before making a decision.
