Menstrual shame in schools: Class 8 student forced to take exam outside
text_fieldsCoimbatore: A Class 8 student from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, was allegedly forced to take her science examination outside the classroom due to being on her menstrual cycle, India Today reported.
The shocking incident took place at a private school in Senguttai and has garnered widespread attention.
A viral video shows the student's mother rushing to her, visibly distressed, to find out what transpired. In the clip, the student explains to her mother that the school's principal instructed her to sit outside during the exam. Outraged, the mother can be heard questioning how a young girl could be subjected to such treatment during her period while attempting to take an exam.
A similar incident occurred earlier this year in Uttar Pradesh, where a Class 11 student at a girls' school was reportedly made to leave the classroom for an hour after requesting a sanitary napkin during an examination. These occurrences highlight the pressing need for addressing menstrual stigma and ensuring dignity and support for young students in educational institutions.
The father of the student filed a formal complaint, stating that his daughter became aware of the onset of her menstrual cycle while at school for an examination.
According to the complaint, after the student approached the school principal to request a sanitary pad, she was reportedly instructed to leave the classroom. She was then forced to remain outside for nearly an hour. Deeply concerned about the incident, the father lodged grievances with multiple authorities, including the Department of Women's Welfare, the State Women's Commission, the District Magistrate, and the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS).
As a result, an official investigation into the matter has been initiated to address the issue and ensure accountability.
