Farmers’ dispute along India-Bangladesh border, Border forces intervene on time
text_fieldsTensions briefly flared along the India-Bangladesh border near the Sukdevpur border outpost on Saturday morning after an altercation between farmers from both countries escalated into a clash.
The situation, however, was quickly brought under control through prompt action by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. when Indian farmers working near the international boundary accused Bangladeshi farmers of crop theft. The disagreement soon intensified, with farmers from both sides gathering in large numbers, shouting abuses, and throwing stones at each other.
A statement from the BSF confirmed the escalation but assured that their timely intervention, along with assistance from the BGB, successfully dispersed the groups and restored order. "The situation was immediately brought under control. Farmers from both sides were sent back to their respective territories," the statement said, adding that there were no reported injuries.
The BSF urged Indian farmers to avoid direct involvement in border disputes and to report any grievances to BSF personnel for resolution. "We have advised Indian farmers to remain calm and assured them that necessary measures will be taken for any farming-related concerns," the force stated.
On the Bangladeshi side, BGB personnel played a key role in de-escalating the situation, ensuring that Bangladeshi nationals gathered near the border were dispersed. By late afternoon, some individuals were still observed within 50-75 meters of the international boundary, but further escalation was prevented.
The incident comes on the heels of recent tensions regarding border fencing activities in the Sukdevpur area. Earlier this month, the BGB raised objections, claiming certain construction activities encroached on Bangladeshi territory. The issue was resolved after discussions, allowing construction to resume the following day.
To prevent similar disputes, BSF and BGB commanders in the region are working to improve coordination and communication. Recent bilateral meetings, including a sector commander-level border coordination meeting held on Wednesday at Benapole in Bangladesh, have focused on addressing such issues and fostering cooperation between the two nations.
