AAP leader Atishi submits her resignation as Delhi CM to Lt Governor VK Saxena.

New Delhi: AAP leader Atishi on Sunday submitted her resignation as Delhi Chief Minister following the party’s crushing defeat in the Assembly elections at the hands of the BJP.

Atishi tendered her resignation to Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena at the Delhi Secretariat, marking the end of AAP’s decade-long rule in the capital.

Despite the party’s overall debacle, Atishi managed to retain her Kalkaji seat, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by a narrow margin of 3,521 votes. However, her victory was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disastrous election for AAP, which saw senior leaders including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendar Jain suffer shocking defeats.

The BJP’s landslide victory in Delhi brings an end to the Kejriwal-led governance model and signals a shift in public sentiment, where promises of freebies and sops no longer guarantee electoral success. The win also strengthens the BJP’s political grip over North India, as it now governs all neighboring states, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan.

The BJP’s dominance in border constituencies, especially those adjoining Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, played a key role in its victory. AAP’s repeated accusations against the Haryana government over Yamuna water contamination failed to resonate with voters, while its handling of the stubble-burning crisis in Punjab also drew backlash. Many saw AAP’s ongoing clashes with the Centre and the Lieutenant Governor as mere diversionary tactics.

For the BJP, this win marks the end of a long wait to reclaim Delhi after consecutive defeats in 2015 and 2020. Now, with a clear mandate, the party is set to implement its vision for the national capital, officially bringing the AAP era in Delhi politics to a close.
